AOI FUJIWARA

Born in 1994 in Aichi, Japan
Lives and works in Aichi, Japan

Aoi Fujiwara skillfully combines traditional expressions from the history of painting with distortion techniques inspired by contemporary media such as anime, manga, and videogames to create bold, unique artworks characterized by vivid effects.
Her works explore a variety of themes, from light and explosions to emotion and collapse, each with a unique artistic approach.

While studying abroad at the University of Brighton, Fujiwara's professor asked a question that deeply affected her: ‘Why do you, as a Japanese, paint in such a Western manner?’ This inquiry prompted a reevaluation of influences, leading her to incorporate visual effects from anime, manga, and videogames into her work.

The series ‘Explosions’ is inspired by her familyʼs experience with natural disasters, exploring unpredictable moments and the collapse of everyday life.
‘Light’ is based on her childhood hopes for the future. By contrasting light and darkness, she aims to portray the positive glow of hope and prayer as well as the things that inevitably disappear, depicting both the light and the shadows that are cast.
Furthermore, in ‘Emotion’ and ‘Collapse’ Fujiwara touches upon issues such as global pandemic diseases, wars, conflicts, and economic collapse, vividly capturing the state of todayʼs society.
Through various effects, she hopes to manifest invisible feelings and sensations, attempting to open up a new dimension for visual art.
